Pacific Coast Native Iris Workshop

[This notice by Liz Parsons appeared in the Dec. 2004 newsletter of Santa Rosa's "Milo Baker" chapter of the California Native Plant Society:]

"Pacific Coast Native Iris is one of the most popular native perennials, and sells rapidly at our annual sale. This year we had 84 and sold them all! We want to make sure that we have an equal number next year.
PCN iris can only be divided during the winter, so we are going to have an iris-potting workshop at Mary Aldrich's in Santa Rosa on December 11 at 11:30 am. Iris rhizomes from mature clumps will be brought in from various gardens and we will divide and label them, and put them into containers.
We will need willing workers and also people who will be able to take them home to care for until the October 8, 2005 sale. If you would like to come and help, call - or just show up and we will put you to work!"

Members of Santa Rosa's "Milo Baker" chapter of the California Native Plant Society gathered on a foggy December morning to get new iris plants ready for the 2005 annual plant sale.

The old leaves are clipped short, and individual plants separated into their own pots, with the crown just visible above the soil surface. Some gardeners add as a finishing touch a sprinkling of fertilizer (like Osmocote) to pots containing the newly planted iris.
